How to Take Accurate Body Measurements

To ensure a precise fit when choosing the correct size or ordering made-to-measure garments, it is essential to take body measurements accurately. Use a soft, flexible measuring tape and avoid wearing bulky clothing while measuring. For the most reliable results, take measurements directly on the body while wearing light underwear or close-fitting garments, ensuring the tape lies flat against the skin without being too tight or too loose.

Chest Circumference:

  • Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest.

  • Ensure the tape is straight across your back and chest.

  • It should fit snugly against your body without tightening.

Waist Circumference:

  • Wrap the measuring tape around the narrowest part of your torso, typically located between the bottom of the ribcage and the navel.

  • Keep the tape straight at all times.

  • It should rest comfortably against the skin without compressing it.

Hip Circumference:

  • Measure around the widest part of your hips.

  • Be sure to include the fullest part of the buttocks in the measurement.

  • The tape should be snug but not tight.

Body Loop Measurement:

(This measurement is commonly used for form-fitting or stretch garments.)

  • Place one end of the measuring tape on your shoulder.

  • Run the tape down across the front of your torso, pass it between your legs, and bring it up along your back to the starting point on your shoulder.

  • Make sure the tape follows the natural contours of your body without twisting.

Inseam Length:

  • Measure from the highest point of the inner thigh (near the crotch) down along the inside of the leg to the ankle, or to your desired trouser length.

  • Keep the tape aligned with the inner leg.

Sleeve Length:

  • Start measuring from the edge of your shoulder.

  • Run the tape down along the arm to the wrist.

GENERAL TIPS

  • Use a soft, flexible measuring tape (tailor’s tape).

  • Keep the tape flat and untwisted during all measurements.

  • Ensure the tape is snug but not tight—it should follow the natural shape of your body without compressing it.

  • Breathe normally while taking the measurements.

  • For greater accuracy, ask someone to assist you.

  • If measuring yourself, use a full-length mirror to check that the tape is properly positioned and level.

  • The tape must be taut and free of creases.

  • Check on both hands.

Finger Length X-B:

  • Start from the base of the palm and extend the measurement to include the first two knuckles of the middle finger.

  • Make sure the tape follows a straight line along the palm and fingers.

How to Take Accurate Foot Measurements

To choose the right size, it's important to take accurate foot measurements. Use a tape measure or ruler and make sure to accurately mark the points you want to measure. It's best to take measurements barefoot.

Foot Length:

  • Remove your shoes and stand on a sheet of white paper.

  • Use a pen to trace the end of your heel and the tip of your longest toe.

  • Using a ruler, measure the distance between the two points.

  • Check this on both feet.

Foot Width:

  • Remove your shoes and stand on a sheet of white paper.

  • Use a pen to locate the widest part of your foot, usually it's located at the level of your toes, just below the joints of your little toe and big toe.

  • Using a ruler, measure the distance between the two points.

  • Check this on both feet.
